Shreya Ghoshal. (TOI Photo)Having given musical hits in movies like Guru, Salaam-E-Ishq, Cheeni Kum, Om Shanti Om, Jab We Met, Saawariya, Aaja Nachle, Laga Chunari Mein Daag, and so many more, we wouldn’t be wrong if we call her the next crooning queen of Bollywood! So as she gets going with her new job of judging a singing reality show, KT catches up with the songstress as we ask her after reigning the industry in 2007, what more is she looking forward to this year.
New Year Resolution? “My each year begins with me resolving to lose weight. But I’m never able to sustain it since I am a big foodie and my mom is the best cook. Anyway, this year too, I’ve resolved to stay fit by joining yoga classes and shed those seven kilos that I put on last year!"
How did you get into judging a reality show? Oh, judging this reality show was a long made promise to Gajendraji (Singh). I believe he’s one of the most knowledgeable people of the music fraternity and for the past seven years he had been asking me to judge his show, so here I am keeping my promise. Personally, I take it as a good break from routine recordings. Plus, getting to guide young talent is one of the best gifts I could have got last year.”
You’ve given some of the best songs of 2007. How’s it been like? “It’s never that easy. Trust me there are moments when I feel like any other 23-year-old. Even I wish to give time to my family, my personal riyaaz... sometimes we are not even keeping well but we still need to go for recordings. But still, I enjoy for singing helps me de-stress. I live music, dream music and I feel I am born for music. Besides, what I like the best about our industry is that here one’s work is more respected than his age. I sang for Devdas when I was just 16 but the respect and recognition I’ve got is very humbling. Even seniors refer to me as Shreyaji which is quite a compliment for me.” Critics say Shreya Ghoshal has wiped off Alka Yagnik's market. Comment. “I am not here to compete with anybody. Music is my life and I enjoy working. Besides, Alkaji is like my mom. I can’t even think of comparing myself to her. And I have my own audience and she has hers.” From the ones you’ve delivered, which is your favourite song? “It’s difficult to choose. All songs are like my babies. However, among my latest ones Ek pal ke liye... from Ankahee is very close to my heart, but sadly, I feel it wasn’t marketed well.” Any plans to take up acting too? “Honestly, I’ve often been complimented by reputed filmmakers for my looks and have also been offered roles for their movies. But as of now, I have no plans of stepping in to acting. My actual skill lies in music and not acting.” What’s on your marriage front? “I feel one who cannot enjoy or appreciate music is a very emotionless person. So I’ll ensure that I marry someone who, if not a singer, at least enjoys music.”
